About

Welcome to my blog!

Me

I’m Günther Greindl (email), postgraduate student and lecturer at the University of Vienna (more precisely: a doctoral student, which is the continental European equivalent of an Anglo-American Ph.D. student), at the Department of Philosophy of Science (Wissenschaftstheorie).

I hold a master’s degree in law (University of Vienna) and a bachelor of science degree in computer science (Technical University of Vienna). I have conducted further studies (at undergraduate and graduate level) in philosophy of science, philosophy, cognitive science, physics, mathematical logic and evolutionary biology.

Research

View my research proposal here.

Site

This site is a sort of companion to my Ph.D. work which started in October 2006. I want to write down my preliminary musings and invite comments from interested readers. Of course, I’ll not limit myself to strictly Ph.D. related stuff, but also comment on a wider range of topics that draw my interest.

Why the name complexitystudies? My original intention was to work on complex systems (CS), but I have strayed. ;-) Anyway, the insights I have gained during my research into CS have so profoundly influenced my thinking and my view on things that I thought it would be fitting to leave the name.

Short Inofficial Bio

I did lots of traveling around with my parents during my childhood and went to schools abroad. I came to Austria with sixteen and made my matura/abitur.

I served in the military for a year and then studied law at the University of Vienna. While working (for five years) in the private industry I took up studies in computer science which I finished just recently; and now, finally, I have time for research. :-)

After one year into my thesis I must say that I am enjoying this kind of work very much.

Disclaimer

Expect libertarian, futurist, and transhumanist opinions here.

Thinking is the art of expanding boundaries - this is only achieved by venturing into territory not charted by commonly held views. If transcending the mental constructs your society has put in place to guard you against the vastness of the cosmos - this site may not be for you.

The ideas expressed here are my own and may not concur with the opinions of my advisers (or be in alignment with official university positions).

Also, if you’re reading blog posts older than one second my opinions may already have changed. ;-)

Site Design

The wordpress theme used is Cutline 3-Column Split by Chris Pearson.

I designed the header by blending free material (photos/art) available on Stock.XCHNG. Thanks especially to the users: shifd, clix, kakaopor, gobran111, am-y  and vivre.
